Purpose of the book

The purpose of this book is to provide:

•a clear understanding of an Orton Gillingham lesson
•a detailed explanation of how to teach specific lessons, including syllables, teaching the types of syllables, adding suffixes, etc.
•caution signs to watch  when teaching certain phonograms and concepts
•the why’s and how’s to make corrections during parts of the lesson
activities to be used in conjunction with the lessons and to support instruction  at all levels
•understanding the use of Fingertip™ Books

This book has provided me with an outlet to share my invaluable experience in teaching Orton Gillingham phonics to students, teachers, and aspiring teachers. My hope is that it will inspire teachers and parents to learn more about the explicit, systematic, multisensory teaching of phonics and reading so more students will become better readers.  I hope as you refine your skills in this type of teaching phonics you will be empowered by the genius of Orton Gillingham.

Your students will reap the benefits!!!

The Teaching Manual consists of three parts:

1. The Book, Teaching of Phonics:

   • gives information and explains

     how to teach specific  lessons

   • and parts of the Orton-

     Gillingham approach.

2. Run-Off sheets contain the sheets  to teach the lessons.

3. Cue Cards are included. These are intended to be used as lessons are taught.
